For the anxious heart facing an operation. Place yourself, your body, and your doctors in the hands of the Great Physician.
Father, I am afraid. I am sitting here in a hospital gown with a bracelet on my wrist and a knot in my stomach. I am afraid of the anesthesia, afraid of what they will find, afraid of what could go wrong. I am afraid of not waking up. Meet me in this fear, Lord, because I cannot face it alone.
You know my body better than any surgeon. You formed every organ, every vessel, every nerve ending. You knit me together in my mother’s womb and declared that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. This body is Your craftsmanship, and I am asking You to be in that operating room, present in every decision.
Steady the hands of my surgeon, Lord. Sharpen their mind and give them clarity and focus. Let their years of training serve Your purposes. Surround them with a team that is attentive and catches what needs to be caught. Even if they do not know You, use them as instruments of Your healing.
Be with the nurses who will care for me before, during, and after. Give them gentleness and competence, and let me feel safe in their hands. And if there are decisions to be made while I am under anesthesia, Lord, guide the people responsible for my life.
And Father, I lift up the people in the waiting room. My family and friends, sitting in uncomfortable chairs, watching the clock, trying not to imagine the worst. Give them the same peace I am asking for myself. Let them feel Your presence there and know that You have me in Your hands.
When I wake up, let the first thing I know be Your presence. Let my body heal the way You designed it to heal. And if the news after surgery is hard, give me the strength to face it with You beside me.
I am placing my body on this table, but I am placing my life in Your hands. You are the Great Physician, and Your power has not diminished. I trust You with this surgery and with every day that follows.
In the name of Jesus, who healed with a touch and spoke life into the dead, I pray.

If you’re in a hospital room, whisper it. If you’re at home the night before, speak it plainly. Either way, God hears.
Name the specific surgery, the surgeon, and the fear. God is not overwhelmed by any detail.
Before they wheel you in, ask a family member or friend to hold your hand and pray. You can also send a request to our fellowship. A real person reads each one, and we pray over it by name.
