Why We Pray

The Biblical Foundation

This ministry did not begin with us. Scripture calls believers to pray for one another, and everything we do is an attempt to obey that call. Here are the passages that lead us, one by one.

The Case for Intercession

Prayer for others runs through all of Scripture

Abraham pleaded for a city, and Paul named the churches in his prayers. The Bible treats intercession as normal Christian life. These are the passages our fellowship stands on.

01

Freedom in Christ

The freedom Scripture describes was won by Christ. It belongs to everyone who is in Him, and it is what we ask God for when we pray over a request.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Galatians 5:1

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

John 8:36
02

Waiting on the Lord

Scripture teaches stillness as part of prayer. Quieting ourselves before God is itself an act of trust in who He is.

Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalm 46:10

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.

Psalm 37:7
03

Praying Together

Jesus attached a specific promise to believers who agree together in prayer. That promise is the reason we pray as a fellowship instead of alone.

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

Matthew 18:20

They all joined together constantly in prayer.

Acts 1:14
04

Carrying One Another’s Burdens

Scripture commands believers to intercede for one another and ties healing to that practice. This command is the reason we pray over each request that reaches our inbox.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

Pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

James 5:16
05

Confession and Forgiveness

Scripture connects freedom with honesty before God about our own sin, and with mercy toward the people who have wronged us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Luke 6:37
06

The God Who Hears

All prayer rests on the claim that God listens. Scripture makes that claim repeatedly and without hedging.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

1 John 5:14

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Jeremiah 29:12
07

Persistence in Prayer

Jesus taught His followers to keep asking and not give up. His teaching is the reason we set no stop date on the requests we receive.

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Luke 18:1

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
08

Access to God

Because of Jesus, anyone may approach God directly. Scripture invites us to come with confidence, whatever we are carrying.

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings.

Hebrews 10:22
09

Healing and Comfort

Scripture places God nearest to the brokenhearted. When we pray for the hurting, we are asking Him to do what He has said He does.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 147:3
10

Peace Beyond Understanding

Scripture promises that presenting our requests to God brings a peace that guards heart and mind. That peace can arrive before any circumstance changes.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:6

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Colossians 4:2

Let us pray with you

If these passages describe something you need, send us your request. A real person will read it, and our fellowship will pray over it by name.
