A prayer for a quiet mind at night and rest that actually arrives. Written for anyone who lies down tired and stays awake worrying.
Father, the house is quiet but my mind is not. I lie down and the worries of the day rise up to meet me. Plans, regrets, and things I cannot control all ask for my attention at the hour I have the least strength to give it. So I bring them to You now, before I close my eyes.
You said, come to Me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. So I come. My body is tired and my mind is more tired still. Take what I am carrying tonight and hold it until morning. You are awake either way, and You have asked me to bring it to You.
Quiet my thoughts, Lord. When my mind replays today or races ahead to tomorrow, remind me that both of those days belong to You. You keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on You. Stay my mind on You tonight, on Your goodness, Your patience, and Your care for me.
I will lie down in peace and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. I say those words over this bed and this room. Watch over the people I love while we sleep. You who keep Israel neither slumber nor sleep, so nothing will happen in this house tonight that You do not see.
Give my body the rest it needs. Repair what the day wore down. Let me wake with strength for what You have actually given me to do, not for the troubles I rehearsed in the dark. You give sleep to those You love, and I receive it as a gift instead of something I have to earn.
Thank You that I do not have to hold my life together through the night. You hold it. I loosen my grip, I close my eyes, and I trust You with the hours I will not remember. Stay near until morning, and meet me there when I wake.
Amen.

Scripture
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Isaiah 26:3When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
Proverbs 3:24For so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Psalm 127:2Guidance
You do not need to get up or kneel. Pray this from your bed, with the lights already off if you like. God hears you lying down as clearly as He hears you standing.
Before you ask for sleep, tell God specifically what your mind keeps returning to. Naming a worry moves it out of the dark and into His hands. A whispered list is enough.
Read it once through at a whisper, or think it line by line. Speed is not the point. Let the last paragraph be the last thing you say tonight.
If your thoughts start up again, do not fight them. Go back to Psalm 4:8 and repeat it quietly until the words slow down with your breathing.
