The Bible speaks directly into the struggle of addiction. These ten passages carry hope, strength, and the promise that God’s power is greater than the chains. His Word can hold you through this fight.

Each passage below is paired with a brief reflection on how it speaks to recovery. Read them slowly, and speak them out loud where you can. The Word of God carries its own authority.

1. John 8:36

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

This is the anchor verse for a person in recovery. Freedom does not come through willpower. Christ gives it. “Free indeed” means fully free, with no chain remaining, and that is what He offers you.

2. 1 Corinthians 10:13

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.”

You are not alone in this fight. God has set a limit on the craving that feels unbearable, and He is faithful to provide a way out. Your part is to watch for the way out He opens.

3. Philippians 4:13

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

This strength does not come from your own effort or determination. It comes from Him. When you feel you cannot make it through another day, this verse reminds you that His strength is available to you now.

4. 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Your past does not define your future. In Christ, you are not the person you were yesterday. The old identity is gone, the names you called yourself along with it, and God is making you new.

5. Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.”

Fear does much of addiction’s work, whether it is fear of failure, fear of withdrawal, or fear that you’ll never feel normal again. God answers each of them the same way. He is with you, and He will help you.

6. Romans 8:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Shame keeps people locked in the cycle, and God does not deal in shame. He convicts and corrects and calls you forward, but He does not condemn you. Sit with that truth for a while.

7. Psalm 34:17-18

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”

God is not distant from the broken. He stays close to them, and this psalm says so plainly. Your cry for help reaches Him, and He responds to it.

8. Luke 4:18

“He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.”

Jesus described His own mission with these words, and they include you. Freedom for prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind belong to the work He came to do.

9. Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Addiction tells you there is no future worth living for. God says otherwise. He has plans for you, good ones, and they reach well past the darkness of this season.

10. Psalm 107:13-14

“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.”

Here is the promise. Cry out to God, and He saves. He brings you out of darkness and He breaks the chains. The psalm does not say He might. It says He does.

How to Use These Scriptures

Write them on index cards and keep them where you will see them through the day. When a craving hits, read them out loud. And if you want others standing with you in this, send us a prayer request. A real person reads each one, and our fellowship prays over each request by name.
